Packing in enough pixels to qualify this 24in screen as a ‘Retina’ display, the 4.5K resolution screen has 4480×2520 pixels at 218ppi. It’s just a minor annoyance that you might still have to use dongles for USB-A devices and get a SD-card reader if you’re a vlogger.
The deep integration between the MacOS and M1 means that native Apple apps like iMovie and Photos are fluid and snappy, making them a joy to use without any rainbow-wheel moments. The specs might “look” meek compared to other competitors or even Apple’s own 27in iMac that still continues in its previous form factor, but with considerably less RAM, less CPU cores and integrated graphics, the 24in iMac never lets you feel it.

Even though it has been designed to look friendlier and more inviting, the iMac packs a professional punch when it comes to speed.ĤK edits on iMovie, RAW image edits in PS or even multiple tabs of InDesign to make this magazine, all of it works stutter-free and with a polish that makes MacOS Big Sur shine. In essence, identical to the one we have seen and tested on the iPad Pro and MacBook Air, except the different thermals, the M1 SoC still impresses with every task it’s asked to perform. Even its unboxing is a special experience. The updated stand adjusts the screen for angle (but not for height) while keeping the iMac anchored no matter how you use it. The white bezels, while still a controversial design decision, work better than the black borders when you actually put it on a desk in a regular room. It’s Apple thinking outside the box by maximising the space inside the box, again! Measuring just 11.5mm at its thickest point, which is all of it basically, the iMac is still the best looking all-in-one out there. So while removing the Apple logo from the chin might make it a bit less conspicuous, it’s very much integral to the reason why the new iMac is also impossibly thin for an all-in-one computer. Yes, that includes the CPU, GPU, a six-driver speaker system, the I/O board and all the thermal stuff. But at least now there’s a valid reason for it to exist since the entire computing platform resides in this space below the new 4.5K screen. If you’re not a fan of Jay Leno (or big chins), you might want to look away now because even after multiple facelifts, Apple persists with the “you’ll learn to ignore it” theory, much like the notch on iPhones.
